A Storied Country Estate Reawakened

Some places are not simply built. They are imagined.

The Enchanted Fig sits on the main-house parcel of what was once a much larger Smith & Wesson family country estate in West Brookfield, Massachusetts. Today, the home, barn, pond, and 6 acres remain together as the heart of that story — a rare piece of old New England estate life now entering its next chapter.

From the driveway, the property gives only part of itself away. But as you move beyond the front approach and toward the back of the home, the land begins to open. The barn appears. The stream-fed pond comes into view. The field stretches out. The water catches the sky.

The quiet settles in.

This is where The Enchanted Fig begins to make sense.

It is peaceful here. Not polished-for-show peaceful. Real peaceful. The kind that comes from old stone walls, moving water, wide sky, weathered wood, and a place that has already lived many lives.

The Home, The Estate, Smith & Wesson Roots

At the center of the property stands a striking mid-century modern home, custom built in 1948 for Florence Wesson Nields, granddaughter of Daniel Baird Wesson. Built during a time when most country homes looked nothing like it, the home was designed with flat rooflines, large windows, open spaces, and natural light from every direction — giving it a presence that still feels rare today.

This place was built ahead of its time — with intention, imagination, and a rare connection to nature.

Long before “indoor-outdoor living” became a design phrase, the home was created to blur the line between inside and outside. Stories remain of a grand piano in the main living room, acoustic details built for music and gathering, children swimming in the pond, elaborate parties, and a family estate created with both means and heart.

A name plaque on the property still marks the Smith & Wesson family connection. But the history here is not valuable because of a famous name alone. It is valuable because of what that legacy created: a thoughtful country estate built for family, land, horses, music, gatherings, and a life deeply connected to place.

The home remains private during this early chapter, but its presence shapes the entire property. Its scale, architecture, and story give the land a sense of arrival — a quiet reminder that this was never ordinary ground.

The Land, Pond, Barn & Horses

The land is where the story becomes something you can feel.

The pond is one of the property’s quietest anchors — and one of its most alive. Fed by a fresh stream, it changes with the seasons, rainfall, and snowmelt from the year before. Some days the surface is calm and reflective. Other days the wind moves across it and the light dances over the water. At sunset, the sun drops behind the pond and the surface can sparkle like diamonds.

Depending on the season, ducks, cranes, frogs, turtles, beavers, and other wildlife may pass through. Guests may sit near the pond in approved areas, take in the view, watch the light shift, and feel the outside world start to fall away.

The barn is part of that same story. At one time, 17 thoroughbred horses were raised here, and the land still carries that equestrian imprint. The barn sits close to the guest area, weathered and functional, with the kind of old-wood character that cannot be faked. As The Enchanted Fig grows, horse-friendly visits, layovers, and small equestrian stays may be available by request.

This is not a theme we are inventing. It is a root we are restoring.

In Its Early Chapter

A living Property Still Becoming.

The Enchanted Fig is still in its early chapter.

We are bringing the property back a little at a time, intentionally and with care. The camper area, fire pit, parking, pond sitting area, walking spaces, and guest zones are being shaped. Flowers are being planted. Land has been cleared. Seating areas are being created. Some spaces already feel peaceful and ready. Others are still in progress, waiting for the right time, the right use, or the right season.

Guests should expect a real private country estate in progress — atmospheric, imperfect, romantic, rooted, and full of possibility.

This is not a polished resort, campground, traditional event venue, or place for rowdy groups. It is a living property being reawakened.
